Santander AI Partnership Launches New Era of Smarter Banking

Santander, one of Spain’s biggest banks, is taking a big step into the future. The bank has teamed up with OpenAI to use ChatGPT Enterprise, giving nearly 15,000 employees new AI tools to help them work smarter. By the end of the year, that number could grow to 30,000. The goal? To make AI a natural part of how the bank works, from helping customers to improving daily operations.

Changing the Way the Bank Works

Santander isn’t just adding new technology—it’s changing how the whole bank thinks. Ricardo Martín Manjón, the bank’s Chief Data and AI Officer, says AI will help staff make decisions faster, handle customer requests more smoothly, and free up time for more meaningful work. Whether it’s managing products, handling loans, marketing, or helping customers, AI will be part of almost everything the bank does.

The bank is also working with other tech companies and startups to make sure it uses AI in the smartest way possible. The idea is not to replace people but to give them tools to do their jobs better.

Quick Results Already Showing

Even though this rollout is new, the results are already clear. In 2024, Santander saved over €200 million through AI projects. AI assistants now handle more than 40% of contact center questions, helping employees respond faster. In Spain alone, AI analyzes 10 million calls each year, automatically updating customer records. This frees up over 100,000 hours for employees to focus on more important tasks.

Making AI Easy for Everyone

Santander wants all its staff to feel confident using AI. That’s why the bank is creating training programs for different roles and regions. Starting next year, every employee will complete AI training. The bank hopes this will make AI simple, useful, and accessible for everyone—not just the tech experts.
