Cheng Ran's new work "Self-Miracle #555" sold for $144,000, exploring a new realm of generative art.
The generative art piece "Miracle #555," created by Cheng Ran in collaboration with Genify and Sun Bohan, recently sold for $144,000 at a digital art auction held by a certain auction house. This piece is derived from Cheng Ran's 9-hour film "Searching for Miracles" created in 2015, and it explores the fluidity of time and the essence of memory by deconstructing the time elements in the film and regenerating them.
The "Miracle" series was first showcased at the "Lunar Water" exhibition in Seoul this September. This innovative project uses experimental film imagery as its foundation, employing algorithms and generative coding techniques to reduce complex film scenes to their most basic forms, patterns, and colors. This unique creative approach breaks traditional temporal boundaries, allowing each moment to be rearranged and generated anew, constructing a completely new temporal landscape.
Cheng Ran, born in 1981 in China, is a renowned creator focused on new media art. His works mainly involve video and film, often exploring difficult questions in life such as identity and death. Cheng Ran has participated in several important exhibitions, including the 2015 Istanbul Biennial, and his works have been exhibited in cities such as Paris, New York, and Sydney.
Collaborator Sun Bohan, born in 1992 in China, is an applied science artist and curator. He is dedicated to promoting the exchange of art and technology culture between the East and West, focusing on the integration of technology, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and art. Sun Bohan has curated several significant exhibitions, including the world's first large-scale offline crypto art exhibition and China's first large-scale generative art exhibition.
The successful auction of this piece not only showcases the important position of generative art in the contemporary art market but also reflects the artists' continuous exploration of the integration of new technologies and traditional art forms. "Miracle #555" reinterprets the concepts of time and memory in an innovative way, providing viewers with a brand new artistic experience.
It is worth mentioning that another work by Sun Bohan, Neural Drift, also sold for $13,200 at the same auction. This interactive NFT artwork cleverly combines the dynamic effects of neural networks with internet culture, adjusting its visual effects in real-time by receiving the staking of specific tokens, showcasing the ever-changing nature and cultural influence of the cryptocurrency market.
The successful auction of these works not only highlights the important position of digital art and generative art in the contemporary art market but also foretells the infinite possibilities of the fusion of artistic creation and emerging technologies. With the continuous advancement of technology, we can expect to see more innovative artworks that break traditional boundaries and explore new concepts.
