He also added that "finding ways to increase defense spending in the near future" will be the task of the Spanish government. Trump has called on NATO allies to raise military spending to as much as 5%. Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez stated on April 2 that Spain's defense spending ratio for 2024 is 1.3%, the lowest among NATO member countries. Spain claims it will achieve NATO's proposed defense spending target of 2% of GDP this year, having previously set a deadline of 2029.
